Today was National Coming Out Day.
I like girls, boys, and anybody under the sun.
But I don't need to tell anybody that specifically today, because I tell everybody every day.
I watched part of the C-SPAN 1 coverage of the National Equality March after I realized it was on.
I cannot wait until I am old enough to go to a Pride Rally. Really.
The other night, a twenty-six year old male was shot and killed in front of a club in my old town.
It was documented he'd just left Emerald City--the one and only gay club in the city.
Yet it is noted as a homocide, and the news reporters failed to state he was gay.
He was, after all. It was obvious in the way they stressed him being "different".
He wasn't shot because he was doing drugs or drinking or partying. It was because he was gay.
Too bad nobody will ever admit it. He was shot in the face. At least six times.
It hurts that there is nothing that I can do.
I hope that one day whenever I am at a National Equality March myself,
I will be able to be on that stage giving a speech.
And I will mention this man, Elijah Siler. And my great uncle whom died of AIDS.
And I will recount the story of two of my late friends,
one whom died because he couldn't stand not being with his lover once his lover died.
Sometimes I wish I were something more than just a random teenage girl.
I wish I were something bigger, something more important in the present time.

Without hope, the us's give up - I know you cannot live on hope alone, but without it, life is not worth living. So you, and you, and you... You gotta give em' hope... you gotta give em' hope. -Harvey Milk, Milk(2008)
